Rare drop from any <10 level zone. All the newbie zones near the city and on Isle of Refuge. Just takes lots and lots and lots of time.

Can you still get chest to drop off of grey mobs in those "newbie" zones like the Forest Ruins?
It sounds like I might have to create an alt and play on the Isle of Refuge.

Grey mobs dont drop chests =(. You have to create multiple alts, dont finish Citizen Quest or just turn off adventure XP to find all the crafting books on your own.

Do you happen to know if mobs like the forgotten guardians in Forest Ruins will drop this book or is it only sub-level 10 mobs?
Looks like it might be easier just to go ahead and make an alt. :)

The easiest thing to do if you want to farm a book is create an alt and go farm the Isle of Refuge. The book drop rates are higher there than they are anywhere else if you kill the high level group goblins.

yeah finally got the books i wanted, 4, 5&6, and the adept spell book and skill book fior melees. now i can at least make the melee skills if i am lucky enough to find some copper or Lapis Lazuli.
took 2 solid nights of killing on island to get em. Kill any named you can, but also all the protectors around the treehouse. they all can drop the books. each chest it seems like about only a 5-10% chance though, with alchemy being most common. GL to yas
actually i had found an axe a warrior wanted, and let him know i was looking for books - the last one and best the arcane 9, he found within minutes of killing protectors. so i traded him the axe and made all his app3 skills for free. nice deal

Right-click on your exp bar. Select the option to disable combat experience. When you want to turn it back on Right click the exp bar and select the option to disable combat exp again (for some strange reason it doesn't change to enable exp =P)

Yes they have a chance :)
it is zone based not mob based. it is in the drop table for that zone :)

I can confirm they drop from the guardians in FR. Its on a long list of items that drop though. We were the for 3 hours and got 10 drops i think. Only two TS books.. refining 4 and alchemy 7.

Yah, at this point I am going to have to advance Mektos off the isle of refuge and make another alt. Nothing like having all skills maxed, 220% of level 6 fighter, 220% of level 10 artisan, a master goblin slayer title and complete stacks of resources. All of that in search of the mythic Refining 4 book.
Hmm, guess I could finish making my comlpete box set.

Freezing XP on an alt is a godsend for this reason. I'm working on getting the refining off of IOR cause this book is a pain to find regardless.

while farming a full set of 12 on the IoR me and a buddy stats agreed to about the following rates:
Targets: Goblins near the treehouse... specifically:
Single up arrow Protectors
paired protectors
protector - war wolf pairs
(all seemed equal on rates - same loot table perhaps)
Rates seen:
About 10% of the encounters on the long run dropped a chest. YES it can get streaky - sometimes you will see none in 20+ kills and sometimes ytou will get three chests in a row.
Of those chests 40% (+/- 5%ish) will be tradeskill books. The rest will be either shields, tunics, or sceptres with sceptres seeming to be the most common.
Sample size:
About 60 books here and about 40 (maybe more now) for my friend.
Honestly speaking NO books seemed more common than any other BUT there is a much hoigher demand for refining 4 and components 5 and 6 due to all the other books needing those to be useful.
The Books DID seem very streaky on the type i got... one night I got the same 5 books all night (including 7 escutheon 6's) then never saw another one of those ever again. My bane was getting a 5 and 6 but I saw 6 refining 4's... honestly they are likely all evenly as common and the sample size is too small to be sure otherwise :)

I found 4 books in my time hunting on IoR. When i check my slayer status it says I killed 462 goblins. That gives you a general idea it seemed to work out to about 1 book per 100 goblins for me.

So, if I were to make an Alt for farming the Isle of Refuge, what class/race would be the fastest at killing?
Assuming I'm going to level 6.9999.
I'm guessing either Scout or Warrior?

Not warrior - you cannot upgrade your skills which is key to quick killing on the isle.

scout with duel wield is a rather scary combo on IoR. i was killing even faster then my priest or mage.

Wow, I didn't know Scouts GOT dual wield before level 7.
Ok, so there it is. Farmer Jones will be a scout. ;)
Thanks.

you get it at lvl one but there is on big problem/annoyance. "BOTH" weapons must say duel wield so no longsword/shortsword combo. buy 2 of the basic daggers sold by the merchent on the isle as "NONE" of the weapons you can get off the quests are duel wield. and double check before you buy that your getting the ones that say duel wield :)
and make sure your jaw has a safe place to drop on as it will  you hit fast and often. with decent use of you spells you will kill group blues (as long as there are no more then two mobs in the group) easy. even at lvl 10 i can take group blues (single mob ones) and solo whites with ease :)

Actually, forged shortswords are dual wield. So you definately can have a short sword/dagger combo.
Aiyana
11-24-2004, 06:22 PM
:p yes but not long/short which was what i said :p
which is rather annoying since thats the traditional main method of duel wield. also annoying since you could do so in EQ1 :(

Boy my eyes are blurry tonight. I could have sworn you wrote SS/Dagger. Oh well...
Are rapiers dual wield? Then you could have a rapier/dagger (main gauche) combo which may just be as nice as the LS/SS combo ;)
Aiyana

the ones i have seen are not :( . but i am using a dagger/short sword combo right now since my dagger does more dmg then my SS  and am quite happy.
to bad you guilds not taking adventurers or i would try and get my wanna be necro in :)

Well meh.... my scout's been using various combinations of shortswords and daggers as she finds upgrades. I'll keep my eyes open ;)
