The only way to obtain pelts is to harvest them in the random dens throughout the zone?? Or can you actually kill animals for them, I have only gotten one pelt off an animal and have never been successful in capturing from dens

Also has anyone bought the various tools that the merchants sell to gather/harvest items? Do they work?

Pelts can drop off certain creatures. Since the trapping pelts in tier 1 freeport areas are rat pelts, id assume you can get sullied rat pelts from rat mobs in the various zones. Personally though i suggest making an island character and going to the deer section. Deer drop pelts rather frequently as well as chests with silkspun boots, and also randomly drop antlers. The boots and antlers sell for about a silver off the island (always buy and sell supplies off island, better prices both ways). You can quickly gather a stack or two of sullied lq deer pelts quite easily, drop em in the shared bank slots and go to crafting off the island.

deer and bear drop the pelts in qeynos area, the deer seem to be more frequent drops though. I've never seen a badger pelt drop only through harvesting.

Badgers, Deer, Bear, Rats. All drop pelts. However the Deer and Bear do seem to drop them much more frequently.

Banded Armadillos drop sullied hides. Bigger con armadillos drop average hides. If you have a group (or are some kind of uber thang) you can also get dropped average hides off elephants.

These average hides you say drop from big con armadillos and elephants, can they be used to make Cured leather?? My understanding is that the only way to get average pelts is to gather them from armadillo dens, though I've never been lucky enough to find one myself. I did however find a black iron cluster once, and turned it into a nice pristine battle hammer for myself. I was very pleased with that. Too bad it is attunable... so I can't sell it when I'm done. :(

All pelts come in 2 varieties:

Sullied and non sullied.

In antonica yuo can get Sullied X quality pelts from bears and deer. I have never seen a badger or any other animal drop a pelt when killed and I have killed at least 50 badger of varried type for quests alone in starter zones and Antonica proper.

badger pelts and molerat pelts are 'gathered' using trapping from Critter dens. In the starter zones you get ONLY pelts from trapping on a success. In Antonica only 1/3 your successes are pelts. The other 2/3 of your trapping successes are Elephant meat and Vulrich meat.

No, don't ask me how the critters took down elephants or how they got them in those tiny pens. And I have NO idea what the heck a vulrich is, maybe some perverse ostrich/vulture crossbreed?

Anyways so far I have seen these pelts:

Sullied low quality bear pelts (gotten by killing bears) that sell for cash
Sullied low quality deer pelts (gotten by killing deer) that sell for cash
Sullied low quality badger pelts (gotten by trapping Critter Dens) that have 0 value.
Sullied low quality mole rat pelts (gotten by trapping Critter Dens) that have 0 value.

Sullied average quality bear pelts (gotten by killing bears) that sell for cash
Sullied average quality deer pelts (gotten by killing deer) that sell for cash
Sullied average quality badger pelts (gotten by trapping Critter Dens) that have 0 value.
Sullied average quality mole rat pelts (gotten by trapping Critter Dens) that have 0 value.

That said I HAVE seen an 'low quality badger pelt'. It was a rare I got trapping a critter den in Oakmyst.

I would ASSUME there is a rare that is trappable in Tier two that also drops the 'sullied' nomenclature and allows you to make the rare recipe items with it.

All my gathering skills are now in the 70's (including trapping). They go up EXTREMLY fast once you break 40 and hit Antonica/tier 2.

So again, as far as I have seen, ALL PELTS have 'sullied' as a description exept for the rare trapped pelts. Even should you GET a rare, you usually need at least 2 rare books to process that rare pelt/item and them MAKE something of it.

I am nearly 100% positive that teir 3 pelts are 'sullied medium quality pelts'. We have a level 20 bard in our guild who just received a task to gather 15 of such pelts from his craftsman society and the sullied average quality pelts I gave him did nothing for his quest counter.

That is precisely what they are, and they're as common as huge vicious chickens in the Commonlands :)

Do they taste like chickens? ;)

Excellent post, Gilfalas.

I find that the best way to get pelts is to ask adventurers for them. The don't sell incredible well, and a pure adventurer isn't going to get much use out of them. Most adenturers don't have a problem with that as most understand that a supplied outfitter is a crafting outfitter.

You CAN trap dens for pelts, but from my experience, this is the slowest method. I can play whack a mole in antonica with my 18 warrior and get pelt drops much faster. And on my server, dens are not rare at all. I can harvest non-stop. Its just the elephant and vulrich meat that I get like 90% (probably an exageration) of the time that slows things down to a crawl.

Tip for outfitetr, and any crafter really, is to combine your crafting level with your adventure level. Harvesting while you hunt is much more efficient use of time for both professions.
