When you are a level 1-9 artisan, you are part of a wholesaler, and get your materials and books from the merchant there. Once you hit level 10 artisan, you cannot progress any further without choosing a class. At level 9 you need to go talk to a NPC (Alfred Ironforge in Qeynos Harbor, or Alethea Augustine in West Freeport) to choose your path. (link to class tree descriptions here)

Important Note: If you did not talk to the NPC before hitting level 9+, you will have to speak to him, then perform one more combine before attaining your class.

After reaching level 10, you need to join a workshop to obtain your new recipe books. You will still keep membership in the wholesaler, as that is the only place you can get certain materials. You can find a list of all wholesalers and workshops in each zone here (insert link).

You can choose your path at any point before level 10, and you will automatically become your chosen class when you hit level 10.

At level 19, you will have to do the same thing, except with two new NPCs (Devona Ironforge or Matthias Zoe), to pick a subclass. One very important thing to note is that if you are having difficulty attaining your subclass, DO NOT go back to speak to Alfred or Alethea, as this will seriously bug your progression.

Alethea Augustine — West Freeport

Maybe also emphasize the one more combine before getting your class part. From reading the boards it seemed a lot of people had trouble with that.

Also emphasize you can start the quest at 9. For some reason, I have this mistaken notion you had to level 9.9 (don't ask :p). Anyway, If you level past 9.9, it looks like you are 9.1 again. I finally figure this out and did the quest, definitely wasted some time unnecessarily.

Has anyone tested doing it at level 1? As in not doing the basement quest on the IoR and then trying to start trade skills after leaving the IoR?

Or talking to Devona/Matthias at level 10? If one works, the other should as well.

When you zone from IoR to your home city, you automagically ding artisan 3.

Mebrhea? Would it be good to mention here, or in a separate document, something like the following.

Once you have attained your level 10 class, be sure to find the society for your class and join it. (insert link to the societies listing) This society will have a smaller selection of raw materials than your wholesaler society, but will carry all your level 10+ recipe books. Note that you can, and should, be joined to both your wholesaler society and your class society, after you have obtained level 10 in your tradeskill class.

Nevermind we found her.
For anyone looking for her she's on the second floor of that house you have to go in/through when you're going to the EFP zone from WFP.

I want to point something out that needs to be stickied or posted somewhere.

At level 19 I went to get my final subclass and I am currently an outfitter. The only choices I were presented with were Craftsman choices. I did some research, and there is a stone that you click in the temple of war near blight sage and it will reset your tradeskill choices.
