Help with tradeskills

is there a guide I can read to start with the tradeskills?? I have read the directions that came with the game but they really only tell you how to craft items.

I talked to some npc at the docks and told him I wanted to be an outfitter...now what do I do. How do you get the recipes needed to start crafting??
