View Full Version : Books, Recipes, and Volumes: So Confused

Greetings,

After reading through the many great guides on the website and digging around on the forums, I’m still hopelessly confused about the different lists of recipes available to a crafter at any given level. I understand the basic idea of purchasing “Artisan Essentials X” and then scribing it, provided my artisan level is X or higher. I was in the beta towards the end and did exactly that - I found myself presented with a variety of recipes from food to fighting gear. Where do all these other books come in, however? What do the (I assume) book titles in parentheses mean after a recipe name? As an example:

After making make basic items, Joe the Artisan has enough experience to ding Artisan Level 6. He purchases his “Artisan Essentials 6” from the fella in Isle of Refuge and scribes it into his book. He decides he’ll try his hand at making a scroll for his friend the Priest: Minor Healing (Apprentice III). Does this mean he can’t make the scroll without another book? Will he need a component found only in the rare, dropped books?

Is there any basic pattern to understanding how dropped vs. purchased books and recipes work? For example, if I purchase all my Artisan Essentials books, and only want to make things from those books, will I need a recipe from a dropped book as a subpart? Are there complete sets of books (I was unable to tell form the lists) such as “Artisan Components 6” and “Artisan Components 9”, or does each level have one dropped and one purchased book?

I’m sorry for all the questions - there’s a whole heap of great information out there, but I can’t seem to find what I’m looking for. Maybe I should just bribe the search function with artisan-made cookies.

Minor Healing (Apprentice III) : In this case, Apprentice 3 is just a level of the spell, Minor Healing. Almost all skills/spells have several levels, each one being more powerful than the last. You start out with Apprentice 1, you can buy Apprentice 2's from the scribe shops, and players can make the Apprentice 3 scrolls. There are several levels (Apprentice, Adept, Master), each having a couple of levels. I'm not familiar with what those are. It's been posted somewhere here, I know).

The purchased books (Artisan Essentials 1-9) have basic recipies you can use. It's my understanding that the dropped books all have recipies that make items that use rare components (eg. bronze instead of tin). I'm not sure that anybody has a full list of dropped books (Although I'm sure EQ2 Traders will have a fairly accurate list sometime soon)

you DO NOT need the dropped books. you will never need the dropped books to make items from the purchased books, only items from the dropped books that require rare harvests.

That is not entirely true in the situation given above. If Joe wanted to make a scroll on the Isle of Refuge, he would need Sepia ink. Now while the ink and dye recipes are found in book 5, there is a reagent that is only found in book 4, artisan refining. Without that book, you can not make the reagent, no reagent no dye, no dye no ink and so forth.

This is on relevent on the Isle I believe. Once you hit the city, you can find the reagent for the dye, and maybe even the ink (not sure) on the vendors.

It all depends on how self reliant you wish to be in those first 10 levels. After you hit 10, I dont think it will be possible to make everything you will need for each final combine yourself with one character.

Not true, Woody. The reagent need for Sepia is "Isonoid Reagent" and can be found in Artisan Essentials Volume 3, available on the island.

The reagent for Cochineal Dye and Ink (Adept III) is in Artisan Refining, though.

Hmmm, does that imply that, for example, at level 12 you might get the 2nd minor healing and at 16 the 3rd? Or are all 3 spell available at level 12 but you can only use the better versions if you buy them...

the latter :)

you only ever get the "free" version of the spell as app 1.. you have to either find a drop or buy the upgrades..

Yeah, making an Adept 3 spell is fun. I have the Cochineal dye recipe, the Dionid reagent, but cannot get the component book 5 & 6 for the life of me, therefore no ink. I even have copper in my bank just begging to be made into Adept 3 stuff.

It isn't just me, though, this book is a hard find on my server (Mistmoore), I only see 1 for sale, ever, and it cost gold, multiple gold. Sigh. And I'm too high to hunt most mobs in the nearby zones to Qeynos. I may have to make an alt just to try and farm this book. Sigh. :(
