Since I made Scholar, I got new buffs.
I usually use the new one that adds to durability as frequently as I can, and I have made only pristine since then, but eats mana hard care.
and I will run 2 buffs at once, if I need to counter. something.
Personally, for each skill (chemistry, arcana etc) I try and find the skills that require no mana (in chemistry as little as possible) and don't have a chance to increase you chance of having poor rounds. I then try and use these to speed up my progress. Should the durability of the pristine level fall below 50% or so, I will then start to use the same low/no mana skills to slow durability loss.
At times, you will definately prioritize durability above the rate at which you craft and at times like that you use your skills accordingly. I also look at the rate of crafting as encompasing both the rate of progress while crafting as well as the amount of downtime between crafting. You will need to find a balance that suits your style and preferences best.
Generally, all skills are accomplishing the same goal albeit in different ways. All of the skills will improve the ratio between progress and durability loss. The more effective the skill, the more it will cost... either in terms of power or in terms of increasing the risk of a poor round. It is important to understand nature of the skills available to you and then try them out in different ways. This will let you determine what best suits your style and your needs in any given situation.

Every skill has a cost, whether it be losing durability, progress, power, or chance, all skills cost you *something*.
I generally don't have a problem using skills that lower chance. If anything, you are trading randomness for a fixed gain. I find that fixed gain to be more reliable in the long run.

Personally I use the skills as much as my Power can handle.
From what I have seen.
Each 'tic' tests your appropriate skill
Each 'knowledge' use ALSO tests the appropriate skill.
I have gotten skill ups for BOTH.
As a Scolor the Tier 2 scribing skills use so little power that I keep all three spammed (especially when grinding for skill not going to create specific item).
I went from skill 33 (had done no scribing until Scholor level 11) to 54 making 4 Appretince 3 spells (and all came out pristine, though took boat load of time).
Now undersand this is just something I learned with scribe. All 4 of my toons (and about 6-8 toons of friends) have shaped-Prinstine backpacks (over 30 made) and I am no were near maxed tailor (like 42 in skill). However fro 90% of these I didn't realize the knowledge were meant to be used 'steadily' and merely used them to counter mishaps.
The short of it...
If you want to improve the skill use your power... use as many knowledge as your powerbar can handle and they skill gain rate should go up nicely.

Two words. Black coffee. Drink it.
It ups your power regen so much you can use mana sucking abilities much more often. It's 36c per cup, but WELL worth it if you're selling for a decent price.
It's all I drink when I'm adventuring or tradeskilling. If you feel like harvesting coffee beans in the tier 1 zones, you can make it for almost nothing. Too bad there's not a tier 2 coffee recipe yet :(

Hmm, I haven't tried to make any coffee yet, but I keep getting coffee beans in the Tier 2 bushes.
Have like a dozen.
