View Full Version : Is transmuting worth it?

Hi all,
I wanted to get your opinion on transmuting past 100. I have got my transmuter up to there now and will have to craft to get him past this. My issue is that to do this Im going to have to take a powder worth around 20g and craft it into an item worth 10s. Im going to have to do this many, many, many times!!! Am I ever going to recoup any of the costs for this? I have noticed that fragments have become much more expensive at T3, but powders are cheaper (I play on Nagafen where lots level lock at T2 so stuff costs lots).
Any opinions? I know some people will do it just so they have a transmuter in their army of crafters but I have all the other crafters to level up too, so only want to do it if it will make me some money later down the line so I can keep twinking my main.
Thanks for your opinion in advance

I know that some of the top transmuters on my server make great deals of money. It's a lot of work getting to the top -- you can either spend a lot of plat trasnmuting and making current level items, or you can go the long way, the T1/T2 route.
Either way it's a hard path, but if you can make it to the top you can make some nice money.

There are a lot of really sweet adornments out there, if you can get through the pain and frustration of leveling your transmuter. There's also a heritage quest that requires a high-end transmuter-made item.
I'd definitely NOT consider it worth it, personally, if you're going to buy your way up through. (And yes, T3 is the odd tier, where fragments seem less common than the powders, for one reason or another - the other tiers are more "normal")
If you're willing to harvest your fingers off in tier 1 or tier 2 zones and turn the resulting rares into mastercrafted items to transmute, you can then craft the results into adornments for skillups. It is the slow way to do it, skillup up on grey-con recipes, but it can be done.
Everyone has a different idea of worth. For me, it was worth it, at least. If I had more inclination, I could be raking in money hand over fist on adornments, instead of hoarding all the fragments and such until I need something for an alt. ;)

On my server, there's piles upon piles of people listing T7 adornments; check your market before you assume it's a cash cow. I make more money per week selling T2/T3 mastercrafted stuff than I do selling T7 adornments.
And you'll need a level 65 tradeskiller of some other flavor to make money... just selling mana and infusions looks like a loss versus selling the Master1s and legendaries they're made from. I've got a 350/350 transmuter, and it's still cheaper for me to buy hardened mana than to buy the 5 masters (on average) I'd need to make my own, even if I count the price of the 4 infusions I get for the "failures" to make mana. (Again, maybe this is just my server.)

Like so many other in-game changes like Transmuting and Tinkering, the first responders do indeed tend to rake in the cash; the rest of us do it for alts, love, or just to be able to say "I did it". Unless you are willing to really study the market to find un/undermet demand, then tradeskilling, in general, won't make you rich.

Thanks guys. Great response as usual. I think Im gonna put the transmuting on pause for a while. Ill save all treasured stuff I find and when I have time transmute it down and craft the munge when I have time. Ill take it easy and get there in the end!!

That's a good way to do it to save your sanity ... or as much sanity as any crafter actually has! :)

Out of all the crafters I have leveled so far, transmuting has been the most painful and the least profitable....in the end I just did it because I could :p I make more plat selling the things that can be transmuted then transmuting them and selling the results or the adornments.

I'm also taking the long road towards Transmuting. I decided that is was time for my long-time Jeweler employee to discover the big world. For his world was confined to the route between the bank and tradeskill-instance in Castleview Hamlet.
Being only lvl 5 at the time I decided to pick up as much quests as I couldn. My main (about 3 years ago) went through the content with almost only levels on his mind, but with this character I want to experience more of the quests, the different zones, and read most of the lore that were implemented in the game. So I also disabled the combat-experience on this character, so I would not out-level my quests that easy. Needless to say I stored all the quest-rewards and dropped transmutable items. So when I picked up the transmuting skill I already could rise quite some skill-points of the items I stored.
Since I'm only a casual player I know it would really take me a long time (if I would ever make it at all) to get the high lvl's and transmuting skill with this character. But I really enjoy playing him in the off hours and sometimes even for an entire evening. And transmuting is also a part of the chosen path of this character.
Hope this helps or maybe even provide an other challenge.
