View Full Version : Tradeskill system preferences?

This is my first post, so hopefully it doesn't seem too far off topic.

For discussion's sake, I'm curious what motivates people to do tradeskills in a MMOG.

I've noticed different tradeskill playstyles over the handful of MMOGs I've played, and I'm going to try to roughly group them. I'm sure it won't be perfect:

1. Tycoon - One does tradeskills in order to compete like a business entity. The objective is to have a large volume of happy customers, have a good reputation, and make lots of in-game currency.

2. Outfitter - Where the player is not as interested in selling their production like a tycoon, but likes to craft to outfit themself, friends, and/or guild members.

3. Hobbyist - Someone who just enjoys the mechanics of the crafting process or the tradeskill content. I think EQ1 tradeskills (pre-PoTC) originally appealled more to the hobbyist style since there wasn't much functionality to the items you could make.

4. Creative - Someone who crafts for a way to be expressive. It seems like an odd possibility, but I noticed that the SWG tailor profession has appeal because you have lots of colors and fashions to mix and match in order to create something appealing.

I'm sure there are other approaches people take towards tradekills. These just capture most of the motivations I've seen in games like EQ, SWG, DAOC, and Horizons. Where do you fit?

I find oscillate between hobbyist/outfitter/creative depending on the game and circumstances. In EQ1 I started as a outfitter (tattered leather armor anyone?) and became more of a hobbyist. In SWG I've settled more into a creative role as a tailor, but I realize that the game favors the tycoon style of play, especially for other craft professions.

I seem to fall into the creative aspect, I am a tailor in SWG :) and also the outfitter. I enjoy making money to live on but never worry about being too rich. I enjoy making stuff for my friends and guild and never charge them for anything. One of the biggest things for me is the socialization in it and meeting all kinds of people. I may fit in to all the descriptions in a way but I am not worried about hording the money and be the most known but I do like to be known for high quality products and/or a fair businessman. :)

I just like making things generally...though I prefer to make things people will actually use (don't get me started on SWG Droids during the period I played). And the more options and variety, the better for me.

I'm looking forward to EQ2's system since it appears to have the variety and options...without it being solely based on getting the best resources available (especially if you have to fight for space to put down a harvester like on SWG).

In retrospect, I wish I'd titled the post "Tradeskill Playstyles."

Anyway, I was looking back at my post and it occurred to me that the four categories I listed look a little bit like the Bartle Scale playstyles (Killer, Achiever, Explorer, and Socializer). Perhaps it's not a perfect fit, but I would line them up as:

Killer - Tycoon (both are about player competition)
Achiever - Outfitter
Explorer - Hobbyist
Social - Creative

I think #3 fits me the most, I started tradeskills for the pure fun then figured might as well make stuff for myself and my friends... making money is the end perks.

Only because you listed it like this that I thought I would show my results :)

Your answers were split as follows:
Socializer 80%
Explorer 66%
Achiever 53%
Killer 0%

Hmm...I believe I fit the Tycoon desription best.
Does that make me evil? :)

My husband's tradeskill playstyle is Tycoon. He is very competitive with himself and others, with the goals of accumulating wealth and making the absolute best stuff around.

I am somewhere in the other categories. Though actually, one of my personal goals is to make the very best stuff...I just don't care about selling that stuff like a tycoon would. Other than that, I do it for the creativity / challenge and change of pace from combat.

For this game, we chose to make our RP guild a merchant House in order to take advantage of both of us enjoying crafting :D

I guess I'm closest to being an Outfitter type -- I like to make stuff I can use. I got the most enjoyment out of EQ1 tradeskills when I got to the levels where my products were actually useful to me and my guildmates.

I'd say somewhere between Hobbyist and Outfitter for myself.

Hmm....that doesnt quite go with me being a Tycoon... :p
Achiever 80%
Socializer 73%
Explorer 40%
Killer 6%

But then I'm into friendly competition rather than cut-throat.

all of them except Tycoon :) I enjoy the system, making stuff and being creative.. a lot of the time I craft for free, or at costs, cos I enjoy it :)
