Use of tier 2 harvest items

So I finally got my gathering skill high enough to harvest in Antonica. I got things like tuber strands and raw black walnut. But as a level 9 artisan I don't have any recipes that use them.

Does this mean that it only makes sense to skill up on the harvesting skill that provides raw materials for your class? Or put another way, is there any reason at all for one who wants to go the scholar/sage route to put the hours in to get forresting high enough to harvest tier 2? What about other skills?

Well, as a scholar you'll still be getting recipies for Jewelry and Alchemy as well as Sage, so I'd say yes, keep harvesting everything. I don't know if you have a use for maple or not, but odds are you do. Plus, even if you don't, it'd be a nasty shock to finally get level 20 and find that you need tier 3 wood products and now have a lot of gathering to do to catch up.

Ultimately you might find you aren't directly using the raw materials from certain kinds of harvests anymore, but that just means you'll be buying stuff from other people that do use those materials. You might as well get in the habit of collecting it, because it's good trade fodder for people you are dealing with.

The other thing is this.

the nodes spawn randomly.

so if no-one ever harvest the wood nodes... eventually that is all there will be... wood nodes.

OK!! I give in!

My point was that as a scholar I could never directly use anything I got by forresting tier 2 zones, but Torval makes the excellent point that I will need products derived from them and I am more likely to get them if I supply the raw materials to a craftsman. And Ngreth points out the horrible possibility of a world full of dead trees! :)
