What you "should" be making is wood products at the lower levels (bows, arrows, pretty much anything non-furniture at the woodworking table) but in practice you really don't need to worry about it much at the artisan level - Do a mix of things to get through it fast.
Once you hit T2 you can do the same basic thing - I made furniture AND other stuff and the amount of woodworking products were more than enough to keep my fletching skill up. Once you hit T3 if you spam your buffs, any bit of fletching you're not caught up with will jump up rapidly enough to where you'll catch up fast. Once you've hit T3 you'll pretty much ONLY be doing fletching (and that's about the only thing you'll actually be able to skill up in) so it goes up quickly.

I found that making one of every item you can makes the lower levels zip along nicely. And for me made it more fun than just making lots of one item.
Once you hit level 10 make yourself a couple of stacks of washes, resins, oils and tempers. Then making one of every item you'll soon be heading towards 20 in no time.

Make one of every item you can, specifically provisioner food since there are so many recipies. (you will miss this option alot when you hit 20)
