Last night Moorgard performed a complete 180 and announced this (http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=uk_announce&message.id=6&no_redir=true)

As we prepare for the launch of EverQuest II next week, I wanted to make our UK players aware of our plans regarding server selection.

Instead of separating players by geographical location, our servers will indicate which language the game runs in on that server. Rather than designating a UK server, our UK subscribers will play alongside other subscribers on their choice of English-language servers. We will also have French-language and German-language servers available for subscribers who choose to play in those languages when the game launches in Europe.

We feel this approach will best serve to build a strong community for all our players. Similarly, we will no longer have separate UK message boards, but instead UK players will participate in the English-language forums along with other speakers of the language.

Thanks for helping create a solid foundation for the EverQuest II community. We look forward to seeing you in game next week!

Personally i think that sucks. It means the euro-english comunity will be scattered over 20 US servers. I was looking forward to a thriving server comunity with people in my own time zone. Instead I have to pick a server where the majority of people will still be at work when i play. BAH

PROS: Being able to play with more people from sites like EQ2TC
CONS: Not being able to raid, not being on at special events, patches coinciding with prime play time..

uhm.. I WANT A EURO SERVER TOO!!!!

I saw on the forums some people from the UK were going to choose kind of an unofficial server once the names come out since it releases a couple days after in the UK.

Just because you're UK doesn't mean you alone have that particular problem. I always have problems as an EST'er because of all the PST'ers - they're still at work when I can play.

I have to say though, that the people I most regularly saw were the UK people on the servers I played on. (*shrug*)

Speaking as someone who was just made very happy with the fact that they *are* tagging an RP server, all I can recommend is that if this is important to you you arrange an unofficial server as best you can. You don't seem to need anything special from the game in terms of support other than a concentration of Euros, and you don't seem to expect anything from those Euros other than that they keep a normal schedule which will then mesh with yours, so whatever kind of movement you can generate in the next 4-5 days before typical European release might well do the trick, if you can get people organized about it.

That's just a suggestion, but we had the RP community more or less set with or without a tag. The tag now allows us to say "see that server? If you don't like it here what were you thinking?" But really you have no special expectations in terms of play-style for a European server. I think it can be done, I just wish you all the best with that.

They've gone for first server beginning with E (and then on down), but it's really sad this was such a last minute decision.

With the amount of instancing in EQ2 vs. EQ1....is having a seperate server due to raiding concerns really an issue? I understand the physical location makes a differene in ping time response but I would think raiding would be a non-issue.

While it would be nice for the folks in the U.K. to have their own server(s) I am sure folks in Australia (and all the other english speaking Pacific rim players) would like one of their own too.

Ithink the aim (or rather my comment was meant this way) is to separate the time zones - although I'd sorta forgotten about the 24 people raid max and the instancing (doh how could I forget).. It may work anyway, if the servers have a reasonable size population.

I'm in the US, EST and we had problems within our guild with timezones. All those on the west coast were working when the east coasters wanted to schedule something - then by the time the west coasters were online us eastcoasters had to log soon after so we could sleep before w*rk the next day!
I can see how it would be worse from your standpoint but hopefully it can be worked out.

Moorgard just posted on the EQII here (http://www.eqii.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=20471)

Actually, I'm pleased to say that we will have a designated "UK preferred" sever at launch.

Thanks for linking to Moorgard's update. The prior news about the UK server had really blackened my last day of Beta.

Looks like the "UK Preferred" server will be Runnyeye, if that helps folks any. :)
