I'm getting very frusterated with forge skills. I have figured out which button combos will give me positive progress when using any of the other tools except the forge. Can anyone help me? I can make pristine items on everything but the Forge and its driving me crazy!

1. The "forge" is a place where many different people work, so you would have to specify whether you are making weapons or armor. (Jewelcraft uses the forge sometimes too, but I assume that's not where you're headed if you're posting in this forum).

2. Get a link to Ariadne's guide. There just isn't a better resource out there for learning what you want to know.

EDIT: 3. If you are making weapons, you might just be realizing the fact that weaponsmithing buffs are a bit sub-par compared to the others. There just isn't a reliable way to rebuild durability in the first three tiers. I'm not sure beyond that.

And this simple fact is making armorsmiths quite miserable throughout the game. You see, making metal bars for armorsmiths ALWAYS uses the weaponsmith buffs. Armorer making carbonite bars only has access to his outfitter weaponsmith buffs..same applies to tier 4 metal bars. The same goes for the metal rings that are used in making chain mail armor. The rings rely on weaponsmith buffs, and are ONLY made by armorers so making pristine teir 3+ bars and rings for armorers is a massively painful process and is necessary because those are PRIMARY components. Hopefully these are just bugs and will be corrected though..otherwise armoring is going to be intensely frustrating.
