I've gotten hold of some steel clusters (which i honestly dread to convert into a bar + plate due to weaponary skill).. but point is.. anyone know if the steel plate recipie is bugged as teh carbonite one? As in Pristine form is counting as Forged an the Shaped one as Pristine etc?
Would be glad if anyone could bring clarity in this =)

Oh God, I originally thought you said "Would be glad if anyone could clarity this." And I thought "This is what EQ has done to our language...."
In response to the actual topic, that's a darn good question. Hadn't even considered it. I think it hasn't come up more because people who do manage to score some steel are mostly interested in getting weapons made with it. Which I hardly resent, because given one piece of steel I'd get a weapon made also, and our weaponsmiths do need some business after all.
Hopefully you'll get an answer. I'd like to know also.

Will try and make a plate later this night when i get home. It should bring clarity enough to the society as a whole either they are bugged or not.

If I had a steel cluster, I personally would wait until the mid-week patch to see if they fixed the bug, before using it. Course, maybe steel clusters aren't selling for 10-20 gold a pop on your server...
(edit) Course, I forgot you can just start the item creation and cancel it immediately.

Won't help to start and stop. By the time you get there you'll have made either a shaped steel plate or a pristine steel plate and that's what you'll have no matter how many times you start and stop. Someone is going to just have to try it, as Khalindor has pointed out, and then at least we'll know. I too appreciate the offer. Steel ain't cheap.

Steel ain't cheap.Or even for sale. I cannot even FIND one on Anotinia Bayle. And even if I did I would have to wait till elvel 28 to even make it into the weapon I want (longsword).

I am a lvl 23 Armorer, and a friend gave me a steel cluster to play with. I decided to treat it like a normal combine and made Pristine Steel plate with it. I was able to make the Pristine Steel item from it.

Xathier, can you elaborate? Did you make a pristine steel plate or a shaped steel plate en route to your final product? And thanks for testing this!

Steel cluster --> Pristine Steel bar --> pristine Steel plate --> pristine final product

I made the steel bar with ease, but failed on the pristine steel plate with the bad luck of the century =P Had 3 major durability losses a few points from a perfect plate. All though, the armor combine was still showing all four types of possible qualities. So i guess i was very luck.. or is this how it supposed to work?
But in either way, we can conclude the facts that:
Pristine Steel bar => Pristine steel bar
Crude Steel Plate => ?
Shaped Steel Plate => ?
Steel Plate => Works as Pristine Steel plate.
Pristine Steel Plate => Works as Pristine Steel plate.

The plot thickens...that is odd. Hmm.

You are correct, I was thinking of just making a pristine plate and then start/stopping, since I assume the regular carbonite issue is a bug and will get fixed eventually. If I couldn't use the plate for awhile until they fix it, so be it. Course, this assumes a fix would be coming within the forseeable future.

Steel plates are curently bugged just like carbonite ones are. I ahve made a couple of pristine steel vanguard armors and used shaped plates for all of them

It seems as though, from stated evidence, that the quality of the steel plate might not matter at all. Which is...well, obviously unusual. If anyone else has noticed similar things that would be worth knowing.

Having made 5 peices of Steel armor up till now (prepatch Dec 16) That having Pristine Steel Plate or Forged Plate makes no matter on armor combines. I have been able to hammer Pristine armor into shape each time working with either Pristine or Forged plate.
However I do wonder on Rings. I have as yet made no Steel Rings. Do you need Pristine Steel Rings to turn out Pristine Steel chain?

To give a clear answer :
YES Steel is bugged as carbonit (20/12/2004)
To make Pristine forged steel vanguard spaulders, my wife (armorer lvl 27) had to make :
Steel cluster = pristine steel bar = shaped steel plate = pristine steel .... spaulders
I hope this is clear enough.

Not sure if it is bugged or not. I recall the blackened iron working in the same way. Unless that also is bugged. I cant recall the exact item that i made, but point was that the blackened iron edge/ring or what it now was.. was only forged in quality but it still counted as pristine. It's just at tickle of a faded memmory inside the head.
But it might be that the quality of the steel does not matter directly, due to the rarity of the component. Where in all qualities are listed as pristine.
Just a theory that i have.

I've made 5 pieces of steel armor now. I've used pristeen and normal steel plates. Both allowed for a pristeen combine using all other components as pristeen.
