So, a guildy gets a severed fir and asks if I can use it. I can make a nice Fir Kite Shield i say.
I select the recipe and discover that severed Fir does not count as RAW FIR.
any ideas?
Thanks

Fir right now is bugged and flagged as Ash. Nothing we can do until SOE decides to fix it.

So from lvl 10 to 20 I cant make any rare stuff because I can't scribe any books and now from 20 to 30 I can scribe the books but I can't make anything because I can't refine the lumber??? I hope they fix this soon, because I used to be very excited about tradeskills and that is quickly fading.

Zglaana, I understand your frustration completely.
After making friends with several other classes, I can see that woodworkers are in good shape. Some classes have an extremely tough time doing anything because of either too much interdependency or broken items.
Imo, there are only a few other classes (maybe even just 1) in a better spot than woodworkers.

Excuse me?
What exactly do Woodworkers make that would make you think they are the second best trade?

my advice would be to make 5 of everything except totems and arrows and see for yourself.
It may depend on market saturation, but I sell 3-5 items very well. And you might say, 'yeah just a few'. Look at some other trades, they're in bad shape :p, depend on a lot more interims, or have to make loads of the same boring thing (alchemist). Armorers have fierce competition (saturated market and AQ quests) and have a lot of dependency. Sages have a difficult time exping. Alchemists potions don't sell or work. From what I hear weaponsmithing is difficult and not very profitable (tier3). Provisioners are kind of on their own. Tailors have it pretty decent. Carpenters make furniture and boxes (not much functional things).
So if I had to pick everything all over again, I might want to be a jeweler, but nothing else.
I actually used to enjoy woodworking when I was younger, so even if woodworking sucked I'd pick that or carpentry.

I make shields, bows, paper, quills, and my biggest seller-maple strong box- and they all sell well. The boxes have been selling strongly since the game began at 40-45s a pop....steady cashflow and big profit margins make it a good trade. If you can strike deals with tailors, metalworkers for needed parts....you can't make enough to keep up with demand without doin it full time. It's a good trade imho and when they fix fir and the craftsman books...a whole new product line opens up for us...can't keep up now:P.P.S> forget the comment about steady cashflow and big profit margins...I...er...made that up....yeah that's it, forget woodworking...it sucks,no money in it at all....horrible...

Is Fir fixed yet? I was about to buy 1 peice of Fir to have a Fir Longbow made for me. If such a recipe exists, which is why I was checking this forum.

Let's look at it glass half empty.....cuz that's the kind of mood I have been in lately regarding TS's in general.
1) Get used to not selling those Maple Strongboxes from Tier 2 for much longer. When the Carpenters hit Tier3 and start pumping out Ash Strongboxes yer market is going to evaporate pretty fast.
2) Bows only sell to a very small segment of the total server population.
3) Shields only sell to a very small segment of the total server population.
4) Wooden weapons.....well they don't seem to sell well at all.
5) Ammo seems sort of useless in most people eyes.
6) Bard Instruments are not coded.
7) Totems are pretty worthless in their current state.
I'm sitting in Tier 4 and the view is pretty bleak atm.
1. most maple boxes go for 30-50s ash boxes for 4more slots go for 3g, for half the price of an ash box ppl can get 3 maple boxes. If moneys tight, maple...
2.every fighter class needs a bow, why? b/c ppl need to put something in their ranged slot, while it also gives them stats and they can pull. Sure some ppl use throwing stars but, i doubt wars/pallys will ever.
3.wars/crusaders/priests all use shields, if your tank is not using a shield they will die fast and not last long. get the buckler/tower going and your set.
4.monks can only use wooden weapons, and most don't like using just fists it seems.
5.ammo... yeah
6.bard instruments will be fixed, so thats just waiting,
7. some effects are desired.

Someday you will be on a raid and you will win an item that can be used to make any one of a number of very powerful items. It would be truly frustrating to get that rare gem or raw material only to have to spend months working on a tradeskill that could have more easily been leveled up as your adventure class leveled.
Some folk may say "well I don't need to be able to make the item I can just get a tradeskiller friend to do it." You can do this I would imagine as the the powerful products will most likely be attunable, but don't you also want to be like your tradeskiller friend? This could also lead to great profit. What if you get a rare raid drop and decide not to make it into an item for yourself but put it up for sell for 20pp?
I went to college for 4+4 years and I had to PAY to do so. While I was sitting in class I didn't whine that it sucked that my degrees were not making me money. I realized that I was preparing myself for the future.
Most tradeskills may suck now but I have faith that the future payoff will make up for it in someway. As broken as the tradeskills started out in EQL almost every tradeskill at sometime in the games development had the ability to shine and make some money. But, to take advantage of a tradeskill you have to get in on the ground flooor.

I agree with Sionnach, in the current game and expansions Tskills are going to have a big part. I can only imagine the system getting better. Plus at tier3 I do well now.

halfway through Tier 4, and I have to say tier 3 was the heyday so far.
All the shields but round sold well... bows sold well... all the weapons (except staffs) sold well...
But in tier 4, the dropped items stats of shields on brokers surpass those of the kite shields I've been able to make... which probably explains why I haven't sold any. Armoursmith recipies are bugged so they can't make plates, hopefully a tier 4 carpenter can set me up soon, so I can see if the tower shield situation is promising.
And at least until lvl 36, there are no wooden weapons... sad, since clubs/cudgels were probably my best sellers in tier3.
Edit: About all I've been able to sell so far are bows 'n bucklers... with the occasional SOW totem.

Well my hats off to the Carpenter who is managing to get 3gp for an Ash Strongbox. On Perma they go for 1gp.

If it is cheap enough, buy it anyway and hold on to it. If you outgrow the usefullness of the bow by the time we get the update, just resell the fir. I check for fir and severed bone every now and then because while some people are pricing them at rare prices - others are lowering the price since they aren't selling. You might be able to pick up some nice rares before they fix the books and recipes.
Anyway, I'm not sure how well woodworkers are set up for the long run. I originally intended to go into woodworking, but I just got a kick out of making furniture and I figured less people would do that. However, I know a woodworker that seems to be doing well at tier 3. I even made maple long bows and people liked those. Good luck to you all.
