I have been trying to craft prestine iron bars, but, it turns out its more then a simple thing to do. I read on these forums about making prestine rawhide leather backpacks useing tailong skill to kill durability up.

Is there any smithy skill or skill combination that can do the same thing? It seems to me like i do better not useing any skills rather then useing them....

Yes, we get a replacement for those skills, but it's not quite as easy as tailoring. You still have a much better chance of hitting pristine, but it definately requires a bit of luck.

If you have any of the other class lvl 10 books inscribed, make sure you are using the correct Iron bar recipe. You need the one for metalworking. I have noticed when metalworking, to use the buffs to try to minimize the damage instead of trying to increase durability. All of the buffs even though they don't say it, seem to decrease success. I have noticed during events, if you click on the right buff, you get the proper durability increase. So my method is usually using combo buffs during events on metalworking to try to increase durability, and at other times use a single buff to try to increase progress or success.

Experiment with what works for you. Read the descriptions of each buffs and compare it to your experiments on what it actually does.

As an Outfitter the 3 counters you should be using are:

Indurate
Tempering
Hardening

I use Indurate+Tempering every round.

If your Iron Bar recipe does not say Technique: Metalworking, you are using the wrong recipe. As noted above, look at your lvl 10 recipes unfiltered or fix your filter for Outfitter.
