I see some good threads cataloging the list of book drops, but here's what I'm curious about: How important are these books?
I wonder, because I am new to the game and still have one level 6 fighter farming these books part-time. It is getting boring. But I've been reluctant to leave IoR with him, because I do not want to lose my chance to get any important books I may need.
As far as I can tell, the Refining 4 book seems to be in big demand. I found several of those, no problem. Are any of these books seen as highly necessary, or will most crafters never use the recipes and simply move on to more advanced products? In particular, I wonder whether the IoR-dropped alchemy books may contain recipes that are necessary as components for higher level items.
Thanks,

the 2 most in demand are refining 4 and the 5&6 books.
4 has the recipies to make the dye (subcomponent for the ink) for adept3's and 5&6 the recipie for the ink.
Having said that, they need rare drops to make anything and the drops are Stupidly rare. As an 18 adventurer/19 Crafter I have never personally seen a rare forage.
Also, the books do drop from tier 1 zones. So you can leave the isle and explore those zones till you get bored. If you want to avoid lvling you can just hold off doing your citizenship quest or your Class quest.

Ah perfect thanks for the advice, I'm likely to hang out in Qeynos as a semi-permanent level 8/9 type for a while :) Although I have enjoyed IoR on all 4 characters, it's getting a weeee bit boring!

On my server(steamfont), the average price of 10 of the 12 rare books(pre artisan 10 books) cost 10-40silver.... where as refining 4 goes for 1-3gold, and 5&6 goes for 50s-1gold....
You didnt state what tradeskills you are planning to go into(outfitter, craftsman, or scholar)... that could help you decide whether the recipes are important to you as well...
I currently have not left IoR yet, because I do not have refining 4, but I have over a gold, and around 14 duplicate books that I can sell.. so at this point I am debating whether to just go to qeynos and sell my dups and pay through the nose for the refining 4 volume, or stay on IoR and pray I get refining 4.... Also, as Liandra stated, you can still get the books in tier 1 zones, so your chances are not lost by moving to qeynos...
I think as more people become aware of the need of these books, we are going to see more people hunting for them(I already see this)... this is good and bad... bad is that you have 10x the people hunting for the books, good is that prices are going to start coming down as more books flood the market....
So do I think you are missing out by not having your books... Hrmmmm depends?!?! /snicker... If you are more adventure oriented, then prolly not.. If you are more tradeskill oriented, then you prolly should stick it out and get the books, or get the 2 rares and enough cash to get the rest on the market, or just the cash to buy them all.... Easy fast cash can be had by hunting the goblins guarding the entraped refugees(quick spawns, and lots of weapon/armor drops that sell for 1s+)

Very interesting. On Nektulos, my first crafting character is a Mage/Scholar, planning to be an alchemist. The first day I started looking for books, I got Refining 4 and the 5&6 one, within probably 30 minutes. I proceeded to get 4 copies of Refining 4, traded one of them for an Adept III book. I also got Alchemy 7 and 9, which I figured was good for an alchemist. I guess there is an Alchemy 8 that I missed.
So my scholar got pretty lucky. My first character was a fighter, and I left IoR before I got much of anything with him. Am thinking of making him a weaponcrafter. He needs to start from scratch in Qeynos, might be better to reroll.
Thanks,
