View Full Version : Questions on spells for reactions

Okay, I'm about as noobish as you can get to mmo's. This is my first ever. I think the crafting is so cool, it's so indepth it has taken me 2 weeks to just try to understand it.
My problem, is I still don't understand a few significant things, and it's difficult to get answers sometimes. I have come along way though at least.
Some of the questions I really need answered are as such:
1)I was attempting to create iron products, just to level myself up on the IoR. It was the first recipe I have attempted that dealt with reaction interactions. Within a short time, I saw icons appearing on the crafting screen, and attempted to match the icon. I noticed that some of the icons being displayed, I didn't have in my tradeskill book. I have done alot of quests on IoR, and have been in no hurry to get off the island. I am level 6 also. Is it possible I am missing tradeskill abilities? If so, does anyone know what I should do?
2)I then attempted to make these iron chains to further try out the reactions, and get used to them. After failing to achieve the 4 quality bars from not finding the appropriate icons in time, I attempted to try it again, this time knowing where the icons I needed were. Well, I made a 4 quality bar iron chain product....Pristine ! So now I know how to do it right? Wrong ! I attempted the process again, thinking that I have an understanding of what to do. The problems came up, I reacted, and yet I failed to create a pristine product, only getting a 3 quality bar. This was confusing now. I tried this several times, failing each time, yet I made all the reactions in time and correctly. What am I doing wrong?
3)My ultimate goal is to become either an armorer, or a tailor. If I continue to use the forge, does that mean I'm neglecting the other devices and knowledges/techniques for the armorer and tailor? I'm a little foggy on what exactly is good and not to good considering what sub class I wish to work on.
4)Is there any point of me trying to craft all the different things in my recipe books? Or would it be better just to stick with 1 thing and level my artisan skill?
5)I noticed that to create an iron box ( I think it said iron, but either way a box for inventory space), or a bed, lamp, etc......I have to make other things. To make other things, I have to make other things. I go to the merchant closest to the crafting station on IoR, and he doesn't sell 99% of the products I need. Mainly the fuels he sells. Do other merchants sell different products, or am I to obtain them through gathering, mining etc?
6)One of the recipes says I need pressed paper. I checked my recipe book, and found no recipe for pressed paper, only a recipe for paperae paper(something close). I have recipe book 3,4,5,6 + magic 6. Does it simply mean I can make that paperae paper and that will be the pressed paper I need?
Sorry for the questions...I'm just so clueless still right now.
Thanks in advance,
Kaz

My suggestion for you at this point is to read through the various guides that are here on the site. Click the logo at the top and then the how-to link once there. I think those will answer all your questions and save my fingers from too much typing. Good luck to you. :)

Hey Moon, thanks for pointing me, however, the questions I have most aren't answered (or understood) from the how to guides.
I've read up on this for over a week, and like I said, I've made much progress, but I'm really lost in a few areas.
Could you at least explain to me a couple things that might help me relating to my questions? I'll try to shorten them to make it easier for a response.
Mainly, I really would like to understand why I fail to make pristine items when my primary ingredients are pristine, and I am reacting to all the correct problems as they appear, and I can't keep the 4 quality bars up consistently. I have succeeded a couple times, but 99% of the time, I'm failing, even though I'm reacting properly.
Also, are there other merchants around that sell different crafting products?
And could you also please explain the question about the paper? I need pressed paper for something, and the only recipe I have in 4 books + 1 rare book is a papperae paper recipe. If I crafted that papperae recipe, would that be the paper I need (pressed paper) that the ingredient list is referring to?
Thanks,
Kaz

Sure. On the paper issue...yes, that's the right paper. On the pristine problem, try using your crafting abilities as buffs as well as reactions. They do double duty that way. You'll have to experiment a bit to find a combo that works good for you. They also stack and I've gotten up to 4 going at once. Adriadne has a posting on here in the tradeskill guides forum called Number Crunching that will spell out some of the effects from a Provisioner's point of view. Hope that helps a little more. :)

there are 2 pages of abilities to start with, click on the next to see the next page.

You can also use those responses as "buffs" and use them when you don;t have an icon to work with. This will help alot :)
But... even then, there is some randomness in the process. Look higher while you are working, above the name there are numbers. there is some randomness to these number. There are many posts on how to deal with this on the boards :) Check the guides section for more :)
3)My ultimate goal is to become either an armorer, or a tailor. If I continue to use the forge, does that mean I'm neglecting the other devices and knowledges/techniques for the armorer and tailor? I'm a little foggy on what exactly is good and not to good considering what sub class I wish to work on. ultimately you will need Tailoring and Heavy armoring skills, and you will but everything else that needs other skills from NPC's or other players, so if you don't want to worry on the other skills, you ahve no need to. You will want to do tailoring items if you are going to become a tailor to get those skills up.
4)Is there any point of me trying to craft all the different things in my recipe books? Or would it be better just to stick with 1 thing and level my artisan skill? You get an EXP bonus the first time you make an item. SO sytematically going throught he books gets better exp. That is it :)

Soemtimes the names are not exactly the same, just look for something close :)

There is definitely some randomness. In general, all your starting buffs decrease the green (durability) while increasing the blue (progress) at a faster pace than normal. However because of the randomness you can't always see clearly.
At level 10 you pick a sub-class and get some new buffs (depends on sub-class which ones). These all increase durability. They are very very powerful and will help you squeak out many more pristine items than you would have previously.

To add, Disipline yourself now. I read above you were working in Iron but are still on the Isle of Refuge. Take note that you were really working with Tin or that the box you made was Elm not Iron. I point this out because it will cause confusion later on as there actually are Iron things to make.
Also like mentioned above I don't care for how a recipe will call for Refined Tin. I looked and LOOKED for Refined Tin. I finally had a tin bar in my inventory when I tried it again and saw how THAT worked.
A friend of mine fell for the same thing he was looking for the an item with the exact name the of the ink the recipe called for. He missed out a full day not knowing that he needed Isoctoinc (I r a gud spelr two) dye.
I fully understand how confusing it is as I didn't find the Buffs everyone was talking about untill beta was over. I simply sat and watched the creation process with a dull look on my face. It is much better now LOL
See i am still wondering what to do. I just made 10 today and rearranged my hotkeys for the new buffs. On some products i hit nothing unless it is to counter. Now on tailoring i keep hitting button and pray for the best :o

I am a craftsman, but I experimented with my brother's outfitter a bit on some tough recipes for his level (tanned leather armor for a 12 outiftter). There are three buffs and unfortunately I do not have the names, but I can say how I used them. It took practice with making tanned plate to get this down.
1 - knot buff (counters knots) - uses good bit of power, but gives good durability and does not lower progress too much
2 - stich buff - uses little power, gives good durability, but LOWERS progress by a lot (does not matter for easy recipes but kills you with tough ones)
3 - nimble buff (2 hands on icon) - free as far as power, gives durability but also gives a chance of dropping a tier of quality completely off
For a difficult recipe I found that the #2 was almost completely un-usable, I only used in emergency situations when my durability was just about to drop a tier of quality. I hit #1 once per pulse on a recipe unless tier durability was above 60%. If tier durability dropped below 60% I hit #1 and #3.
Because #2 removes so much progress it is tough to use with recipes that are already difficult. If you have bad luck and have to use #3 often you may lose a tier of quality even with enough durability....however, I think I found a bug. It may just hide the tier but allow you to still get that quality. I made 2 pristine tanned leather pieces of armor after pristine had dropped off (I suspect from #3 buff). Difficult to explain unless you see it, I hope my description makes sense. If my suspicions are correct, then #3 buff might not have a downside if you know what you're doing.
I also found that once I was on the tier of quality I wanted, with around 50% durability for that tier, I could spam the 3 old buffs for almost garaunteed success in one pulse.
