Every combine that you make, until an item becomes 'trivial' (recipe greys out), will give you artisan experience, but not every combine will give you the same amount.
There are several factors that influence the amount of exp you get:
- final quality of the item
- quality of build components
- level of the recipe
- type of recipe
- discovery
Final Quality
A pristine item will give you more experience than a crude, shaped or normal item. This quality is influenced by the quality of your primary component.
Build Components
Higher quality secondary components will give you more experience. (theoretical value equation)
Recipe Level
A recipe that is closer to your level will give you more experience than a lower level recipe, all other factors being equal.
Recipe Type
Finished items are worth more than interim items, which are worth more than refined items.
Discovery Bonus
The first time you make a particular quality of item, your experience will be approximately doubled. This only happens the first time, though.
For example, making a pristine tin buckle (level 5 recipe) for the first time at level 5, using a pristine tin bar and normal fossil temper, yielded 33% experience. Making a normal leather backpack (level 5) at level 6, not for the first time, using a pristine hide plate, normal leather cord and pristine buckle, yielded less than 10% experience.
